“Aurora Iver. 17. Junior.”
But when it came right down to it, the skin of my wrist looked so white and defensless that I couldn’t do it. It was as if what I wanted to kill wasn’t in that skin or the thin blue pulse that jumped under my thumb, but somewhere else, deeper, more secret, and a whole lot harder to get.
Aurora Iver has always been loved by most people in town except her parents. No matter what she did she could never please her uptight, psychiatrist parents. They seemed to find her selfish and stubborn. At the beginning Rory would strain herself to prove them wrong, but she soon realized that by doing so she wasn’t being herself. So yes, she might be selfish and stubborn at times, but she was also caring, funny, and sweet.
Rory had never been content with sitting still. She always had to be doing something, whether it was just hanging out with friends or going out and breaking into local places. She always wanted more. It started with leaving her house for hours….hours grew into days…days grew into weeks. Aurora got the title of the Runaway and she does it justice. Her parents had called the cops and searches had commenced but she always managed to elude them. When asked to describe her, her best friend, had said “Rory loved mysteries. And in everything that came afterward, I could never stop thinking that maybe she loved mysteries so much that she became one.”
Aurora Iver has always shaped herself to be anything anyone wanted and that’s what made her so popular. What nobody understood was Rory was not a miracle. She was not an adventure. She was not a fine and precious thing. She was a girl. Aurora describes herself as a paper girl to anyone who asks. Completely two dimensional. Rory loves running away, or better yet, Aurora loves planning running away.
